A New Direction

I'm taking a slight turn in direction here as I have found that no matter how hard I try, there is no reasonable way to get around the cost of packaged GF foods.

My mother and I were browsing the shelves at the local B&N and I came across a Gluten Free cook book that didn't include mixing a bunch of different flours that I never heard of with complex preparation, or recipes for naturally GF foods. It also spoke to my wallet as it was specifically designed for the thrifty, cooking challenged Celiac.

The name of this wondrous book is Gluten-Free on a Shoestring. While reading the introduction, excitement overcame me. This book, written by Nicole Hunn, began as a blog! It is like my little safety net so when something doesn't go as expected I can ask the author, What am I doing wrong?

There are several things about this book that I love. The first is that it is written in plain English by a woman who understands what I've/we've been through. This way of life is too expensive to fail. Too expensive to waste money on expensive ingredients for it to come out a disaster, too expensive for us to buy something that looks delicious on the package and tastes disgusting on our taste buds, and most of all too expensive for us to be mysteriously glutened and in pain.

She shows how having basic ingredients in the house and a little monthly and weekly prep work can keep you with a house full of potential gluten free meals. This seems like something I can do. I have basically been given the tools to break away from the reliance of packaged foods for nourishment. Now the challenge will be my ability to use the tools I have been given.

First I will try to make the Pizza dough because I want a calzone so bad right now.

I will not be giving out the recipes or express details from the book. You are welcome to visit her blog at the above link, or purchase her book. I will be writing about my journey on how to live Gluten-Free on a Shoestring.
